George G. Blaisdell founded the Zippo Manufacturing Company in 1932, and produced the first Zippo lighter in early 1933, inspired by an Austrian lighter of similar design. The lighter got its distinctive name because Mr. Blaisdell liked the sonority of the word ‘zipper’ and associated it with the noise the lighter makes when opened. The product was patented in 1936.

Zippo lighters are known for their lifetime warranty and every Zippo carries on the body of the lighter when the casing is removed a notice that says “Use only Zippo stones, wick and gasoline”.

Zippo is an icon of American culture, lighters are recognized worldwide.
